Open Invitation: UBC Taikai

The UBC Kendo Club, co-hosting with Tozenji and Budogu-Zen, will be hosting our first open invitation Taikai! This taikai will only host 3 vs 3 Team Match Kachinuki-Style. There are no dojo restrictions with the team application. Please check the official invitation for more detail!

$30 per participant in one category 

($10 for additional category)

Eligibility

Participants must be 16 years and older and have experience in bogu.
14 and 15 years old participants may join with both the head instructor and parents' consent. 

Category Divisions (3)

Open Women Division 

Under 5-Dan Division*

Open Division

1) Team of female participants only 

2) No rank restriction 

1) No gender restriction 

2) Team total rank must be equal to or under 5 - Dan 
3) No rank and Ikkyu are considered 0.5 Dan 


Example of a team: 
A) 4 - Dan + Ikkyu (0.5) + No rank (0.5) = total rank = 5
B) 2- Dan + 2 - Dan + 1 - Dan = 5 

1) Open to any participants
2) No Rank restriction

Taikai Rules:

- All matches are 3 minutes long.

- The winner remains and continue fighting. Player(s) are eliminated in a case of lose or tie.

- The team will be eliminated once their taisho is eliminated.

- Unlimited encho (ippon shobu) if both team's taishos are fighting.

​

- For the semi finals and final: The taisho will not be eliminated in a case of draw.
It will be an unlimited encho (ippon shobu) until the winner is determined.

Detailed Time Schedule

Gym Opening

9:00AM ~

The host will immediate set up the registration table, shinai check table, and start setting up the court. It would be great if you can kindly patiently wait outside or stay at the area of the gymnasium for the further guidance. (Volunteers are welcome!)

Registration & Shinai Check

9:30AM ~

Registration and Shinai Check will start as soon as the tables are ready. We will first start with the registration for Women's Category. We will conduct the registration for Under 5-Dan and Open category competitors afterwards.

**Please have one representative from each team to complete the registration.

All women's shinai check will be prioritized in the morning. Shinai check will continue for everybody after the Opening Ceremony.

​

**Shinai Check is conducted for all players who are 19 years and older.

Opening Ceremony

10:15AM~

Opening Ceremony will start as soon as everybody is ready. Please expect the starting time to change.

​

There will be a shinpan meeting after the Opening Ceremony.

Competitions

10:45AM~

Women's Category will start first, followed by Under 5-Dan, and then Open Category.

​

Each categories will not start until the each categories end, or we confirm that there will no overlapping with the players between the two categories.

​

We are planning to have a lunch break around 12:30PM.

Closing Ceremony

4:30PM~

Closing Ceremony will start as soon as all matches are completed.

FAQ's

Can I register with different people?

Absolutely! You can register with different people for the each categories! Please make sure you specify that you are already registered in one category when you are submitting the next team registration.

Can I change the team order?

The team order you submitted at the time of the registration will be the team line up. You cannot change the order during the tournament.

I can't arrange my own team.

No problem! We have an individual registration form for anybody who wants us to arrange the mixed team. Please submit your registration form from here.
